Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was detained during a court appearance in Islamabad over allegations of corruption.
Al Jazeera was informed on Tuesday that Khan's arrest was confirmed by Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, a leader of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

Akbar Nasir Khan, a top police official in Islamabad, told Al Jazeera that Khan was captured for a situation connected with Al-Qadir Trust. The counter debasement Public Responsibility Agency had given a capture warrant against Khan on May 1 according to the case, he said.
Khan has been accused of dozens of things since he was ousted from power last year, which he denies. Khan, who has been pushing for early surveys, says the bodies of evidence against him are politically propelled.
Fawad Chaudhry, a PTI pioneer, tweeted that the Islamabad High Court complex was "involved" by the Pakistani Officers and legal counselors were "being exposed to torment".
Khan was seen being led to a Rangers vehicle and taken to an unknown location, according to local media footage.
The party wrote in a post, "Pakistan's brave people must come out and defend their country."
The chief justice of the Islamabad High Court, Aamer Farooq, is said to have directed government officials to appear before the court regarding Khan's arrest, according to reports.
After losing a confidence vote in parliament, Khan, 70, was removed from power in April 2022. He has been promoting early national polls, which are scheduled for October of this year, ever since.
